Zika breeding in the UK in mosquitoes
Mosquitoes that can transmit diseases like dengue, Zika and chikungunya found in the UK for the first time.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said Aedes aegyti mosquitoes and alrvae were detected in East London.
UKHSA’s head of medical entomology and zoonoses ecology Jolyon Medlock said the risk to the public is considered very low.
Highly infectious diarrhoea in the UK
UK Health Security Agency data show that the UK recorded 6069 cases of giardiasis last year an increase of 11.4% (619 cases) from 2024, when 5450 cases were recorded, and the highest number of cases since 2016, official said.
The gastrointestinal illness Giardia spreads through direct contact with infected people or animals or by swallowing contaminated food or water, and it can also be transmitted sexually.
